Story Behind The Song
I orginally planned this song as the love song for a theatrical musical to be called "Equal"-- about an American conservative black politician in an interracial marriage. Then Clarence Thomas was nominated for the US Supreme Court, and real events soon made the plot of the play unbelievable. I abandoned the theatrical project, but I kept the song, which remains a plea for understanding beyond the superficial.
Song Description
I want to be loved for the whole person I am, not for the impressions, expectations or imaginations of others. I want to find someone who understands who I am and loves me for that.

Lyrics
LOVED FOR WHO I AM
(VERSE 1)
To my mother, I'm the child she'll always carry,
To my father, he's a man and I'm the proof.
To old lovers I'm the one they didn't marry,
To my grandma, I'm an echo from her youth.
But I'm more than they imagine,
No, they only love a fraction,
Tell me why can't someone love me for the truth?
(CHORUS)
I want to be LOVED FOR WHO I AM,
Not for what's in fashion,
Not because I'm black or white,
Or what I ought to be.
LOVED FOR WHO I AM,
Love me just because I'm me.
(VERSE 2)
I want someone here beside me when I wake up,
Who can see through every layer to my soul.
One who understands the costumes and the makeup,
One who loves me for the player, not the role.
One who's seen my darkest side,
And knows where I go to hide,
Puts the puzzle all together, loves me whole.
(REPEAT CHORUS)
