Last Chance Saloon

Story Behind The Song

My latest collaboration with Darren Gibbons. Before my accident last year (2019) I was well on the way with these lyrics, and had notes for where the story line was going. When it all ground to a halt, I sent it off to Darren who finished the lyrics and came up with a melody. Now that I'm almost back to full mobility, I have produced this acoustic recording. All good fun.

Lyrics

Last chance saloon (words and music by Alan Gillis and Darren Gibbons)

Verse
Well I said to Joe "it's time to go, I promised that I wouldn't be late"
He said "you've got time for another and you'll still be home by 8."
So I ordered one more whisky and then through the door came Jake
He said "have another drink on me man for old time's sake"

Bridge

So I staggered through the front door, 1.30 on the clock
There's a note upon the table, it said "your dinner's in the dog.
I've gone to visit my mother and I think I'm gonna stay
Just give me one good reason why not - you're never gonna change your ways."

Chorus

So I'm sitting in the last chance saloon
I'm all out of luck and my head's spinning round the room
Yeah I'm sitting in the last chance saloon
I'm plum tuckered out and I'm heading for a big fall soon

Verse 2
Well I was telling Joe about my woes and he said "have another drink
You've got to put your foot down with that woman, at least that's what I think."
So I ordered one more whisky, just to clear my head
There's no point in rushing home now. I think I'll have another drink instead

Bridge
So I staggered through the front door, 2.30 on the clock
There's a note upon the table, it said "I came back but you were gone.
I'm gonna leave for good this time - Hip Hip hooray
Just give me one good reason why not - you're never gonna change your ways

Chorus
So I'm sitting in the last chance saloon
I'm all out of luck and my heads spinning round the room
Yeah I'm sitting in the last chance saloon
Oh I'm plum tuckered out and I'm heading for a big fall soon

I'm sitting in the last chance saloon. I'm sitting in the last chance saloon.
