Story Behind The Song
This song was originally written in 1972 while I was in the US Air Force. There was an essay contest (that I believe was titled "What's the Price of Freedom") that summer. I didn't enter it. I wrote this song, instead.

Song Description
This is food for thought. There is no answer. You can look at it from several sides, too. But, I really think that at times we are in danger of loosing what we have out of fear of what could happen in the big bad world or out of ignoring our true roles

Lyrics
What's the cost of freedom is my song.
Many times been sung before with shades of right and wrong.
And, with those echoes floating down the halls of hallowed time,
What's the cost of freedom, let it chime.
What's the cost of freedom, is it hate?
Times we let the world go by until it was too later.
And, then to save our sacred name we fight with holy pride.
What's the cost of freedom, is it hate?
What's the cost of freedom, is it war?
Men who fought for freedom's name with plans for life no more.
While people who have never fought will reap the proud reward.
What's the cost of freedom, is it war?
Day-by-day we go our way and we never see the change.
Seldom hearing, seldom caring while the rules get rearranged.
What's the cost of freedom, what's the use?
The living turn to apathy. The dead take the abuse.
Well, mark my words there'll come a time we'll bend our heads and cry,
'Cause the cost of freedom was too high.
Well, mark my words there'll come a time we'll bend our heads and cry,
'Cause the cost of freedom was too high.
