Story Behind The Song
I wrote the lyrics during a time when I was living in the environment of a small conservative Christian college. It was the first time I'd ever felt trapped in a bubble. Having grown up amidst adversity in the inner-cities and housing projects of Birmingham, Alabama and Lake Charles, Louisiana, for the first time I wasn't allowing my faith to be challenged.
When trapped in a sheltered bubble, there is the illusion that one's faith is solid. However, one would never know unless given the opportunity to prove it.
For me, it was a God-ordained season for structuring my life in the manner in which God would direct my future. The missing element was my getting out of that bubble to live out what I was learning.
Today I work with mostly believers with the intent of challenging myself and them to take our faith into a doubt-filled world. This song's lyrics reflect this tough season in my life after I contemplated walking away from it all. After taking my concerns to God, this song was my rose. The diverse sound is my musical and spiritual way of bursting through that bubble. It's not an ordinary Christian song because God didn't call us to do ordinary things with our lives.
Song Description
Inspired by the style and writing of Abraham Laboriel and Helen Baylor on their version of "Doxology", this song simply speaks of how God has been with me in the good times and the bad. Whatever I've needed Him to be, He has faithfully been that and more. The song barely made it onto the CD. I just didn't think anyone would be able to catch the vision behind it or pull off what I was hearing in my head. It's one that I sat on for years not really letting too many people hear it. Finally, I introduced it after discovering that Philip Bardowell would be playing on it. It's sorta a world song by default. With a drummer from Mexico City, the guitars were recorded in Athens, Greece, horns in NYC, bass in Laguna Hills, CA and vocals in Lake Forrest, CA.
