Who is George Klabin
George Klabin is a native of New York City. He has been actively involved in jazz since he attended Columbia University College in new York in the 1960's, where he was head of the WKCR-FM College Radio Jazz Department, and met and recorded many young jazz musicians who subsequently became major figures in modern jazz, such as Bill Evans, Roger Kellaway, Keith Jarrett, Bob James, Gary Burton, and many more.
In 1969, after graduation from college, Klabin formed Sound Ideas Studios in Manhattan, which became a major recording studio working mostly with commercials, rhythm and blues, and jazz. Among the many artists who recorded at Sound Ideas were: James Brown (5 albums), Luther Vandross, Paul Anka, The Brecker Brothers, Walter Murphy's #1 Hit "The Fifth of Beethoven"; many of the Denon Digital PCM jazz recordings of the 1970s, Eumir Deodato, Flora Purim, Tommy Flanagan, Chico Hamilton, Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roy Ayers, and too many others to mention.
In 1981 Klabin sold the studio and retired from active participation in jazz recording. In 2002 he returned to record and produce jazz. He often recorded live at a nightclub in Santa Monica called "The Vic", where he met many great young jazz musicians who were unable to procure recording contracts. He also understood that live jazz performances often captured more excitement and passion than studio recordings.
Therefore he set about to establish a venue whrere fund-raising concerts can be held, for the newly formed (July 2005) Rising Jazz Stars Foundation. The goal is to support deserving lesser known but highly talented jazz artists by making their live performances available to audiences and on CD.
