Phil Hamelin
Phil Hamelin is a Canadian film/game composer based out of Nanaimo, British Columbia. With music as a life focus since the age of seven, he has worked as an arranger, composer, pianist and a trumpeter in jazz, rock, classical, reggae, funk, ska, and many other genres.
By having completed his Bachelor of Music at Vancouver Island University he has studied alongside great educators and improvising musicians such as Pat Coleman, Don Thompson, Greg Bush, Brian Stovell, Steve Jones, and James Mark. The four years he spent at VIU led to a wealth of experience and new knowledge in composition, advanced classical/jazz harmony, improvisation, and music production . From combo to big band style jazz, to string quintets and orchestral suites he has honed his compositional tools by writing for ensembles of all sizes and genres.
For years Phil has listened closely to game and film music and has noted the evolving musical tastes on the scene today. He has grown musically into the current modern style, finding inspiration in composers such as Gustav Holst, James Horner, Hans Zimmer, Maria Schneider, Masashi Hamauzu, Philip Glass, and Igor Stravinsky.
