The subtle influences of the artists that inspired his music career -- from Styx to Streisand, Mathis to Mercury, Joel to McCartney, can now be heard throughout John’s first full length solo album. From his basement in upstate New York, John’s early forays into music consisted of turning up the stereo and mimicking the singers that resonated from the speakers. Singing in the dorm halls at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY, John’s friends were treated to his soulful sounds and encouraged him to try out for the local cover band. From the first time on stage, he was attracted to the energy of performing and the impact it made on the crowd.
John’s musical journey was underway. He ventured to NYC to front Pop/Rock bands that were featured at the China Club, The Cat Club, and with one band, ESCAPE, getting local airplay. In 1997 he further established himself as a vocalist with the Pop/Dance single “Take Me On” which he co-wrote for Grand Slam Records/Strictly Rhythm. That same year, John had the honor of performing the National Anthem at Madison Square Garden before a sold-out Knicks/ Lakers game. From this performance in The World’s Most Famous Arena, he recalls “I was very nervous that night until they introduced me, then I just closed my eyes and went for it.”
Over the next several years, John continued to write his own songs with the goal of recording & producing his own album that was “painted with strokes of R&B, Rock, Blues & Jazz.” He says, “With such diversified styles, the challenge of recording this album was to smoothly thread the production.” That has certainly been achieved on his debut album 'What A Man Can Do'.
John found his creative partner in producer Frank Verderosa of Planet V, “Frank was able to design the magical thread that wove the album together and added dimension to the songs”. He adds, “I was blessed to have such amazing talent around me on this album.” From saxophonist, David Mann to the top NYC session musicians Zach Danziger, Henry Hey, Tim Lefebvre and Marcus Wolf, John ‘s supporting cast put him in a position to be inspired and thrive in the studio.
“What A Man Can Do,” the title track, is a sweet ballad tagged the “proposal” song, while “Waiting” is a rock song “filled with energy and gets your juices flowing.” The one cover on the album, “Prisoner”, was originally recorded by Barbra Streisand for the love theme to the movie, The Eyes of Laura Mars. “I love this song but wanted to add a few more layers to it that would hopefully compliment the original.” The added guitar solo, instrumental break and bridge really brought the song to another level.

Says Anthony, “If I had to choose one influence in particular, it would have to be Freddie Mercury, who could sell any song from hard rock bravado to the sweetest sentiment. That is what I aspire to.”

New York, NY February 2004 – Adult contemporary artist John Anthony wanted a cover song that would compliment the original compositions on his debut album, What A Man Can Do. It had to be a song he could make his own. Though it would have easy to mirror one of the works of John’s influences (Freddie Mercury, Dennis DeYoung, Johnny Mathis), he chose another direction for inspiration, a female vocalist. Actually, the female vocalist, Barbra Streisand.
For Anthony, the decision to record ‘Prisoner’(Love theme from The Eyes of Laura Mars) was an easy one. It had the power and energy he was looking for. However, Anthony felt the arrangement needed more layers. He says, “I rented the movie to get a better feel for the song as it related to the characters, mood and theme of the story.” In addition to a bridge section and guitar solo, Anthony, along with co-producer Frank Verderosa, created a dynamic arrangement that ‘…helps the melody and lyrics cut a little deeper.’
Accepting the challenge to match key and power of the Streisand vocal could push the limits of even the most talented female vocalist. Though the first verse resides in an octave lower, to serve as a delicate introduction to obsessive love, Anthony’s high tenor rises to the challenge in the second verse and beyond, leaving the listener with an unforgettable performance.
John Anthony’s debut album What A Man Can Do has received high praise from industry mainstay Billboard magazine and had been given a three-star nod from the New York Post. Inspiration can arrive in many forms and it seems for Anthony he knows exactly how to embrace, enhance and ultimately thrive in its wake.
