electro-acoustic-ish pop with sweet 'n' sexy vocals
get to know me......
She's all about laid back, beat-based, electro-acoustic-ish pop... or as she dubs it: pip-pop. With nods to Imogen Heap and Lily Allen, her "sweet 'n' sexy vocal stylings" have been described as "sensitively sassy, or sassitively sensitive". Either way, she stands out amongst the stereotypical notion of female singer/songwriters.
It started with "Catch a Falling Star", 4 years old, sitting beside her dad at the piano, learning to play and sing. One year later, she started performing and has been on stage ever since. The idea of writing her own music was formed in a classical composition class and she soon began composing on piano and singing with various bands in Winnipeg, including recording and touring.
Her move to Toronto forced her to become more independent musically. "I didn't have a band anymore, and I certainly wasn't going to wait around not performing!" So she worked at her multi-dexterity and soon became a solo-performing act, playing the Toronto clubs and sharing the stage with the likes of Leslie Feist, sara & tegan, Kurt Swinghammer and others. She was the original "wurli-girl," mixing the vintage vibe of her Wurlitzer with beats she programmed on her MPC. She received much interest and support and got the opportunity to record with some of the top producers and players in Canada (Gavin Brown, Matt DeMatteo, Pete Prilesnik), thus releasing an EP. She also taught herself to play bass, guitar and drums and has since used those skills to do her own recordings for film, television and dance.
In search of new influences, she re-located to Montreal. This move gave her the freedom to spend time in New York as well as Toronto, while paying cheaper rent and learning French. She's recorded and performed in all three places with various producers and musicians, in both French and English, and came out with an acoustic christmas EP in 2008. She's also been self-producing her songs. Though a long and sometimes arduous process, with a huge learning curve, she's happy with the results and looks forward to her release in 2010.
You can catch her live shows in Montreal and Toronto or online where she often webcasts live shows from her home studio. Still true to her roots of Wurlitzer and beats, she's also incorporated her laptop as well as some live looping into the show.
