In the mid 90's there was a burgeoning 'original and unsigned' music scene in NYC. One band that was able to make a living at it was James Katz's first group, "Choosy mothers".
With an infectious amalgamation of styles subtly blended through songcraft and improvisation, "The Mothers" packed houses at venues like Wetlands, New Music Cafe, and Tramps while holding down a 3 set weekly residency at Mondo Cane.
The band averaged over 2 gigs a week in the city for 5 years (no small feat in NYC). And sharing stages with acts including Dave Matthew's Band, 3rd Eye Blind,Blues Traveler and Ziggy Marley helped James to sell over 15,000 CD's and tapes between sets and through the mail with no marketing or label support.
Now, armed with an allstar band of his best friends (including Matt Beck of Matchbox 20 and Matt Johnson of Jeff Buckley's 'Grace', James has set his sights on the future.
The new release, entitled 'glow', has produced 3 #1 songs on Broadjam.com, and 14 chart awards thusfar in the current Garageband.com contests. The reviewers at Garageband have also awarded James over 70 "Reviewer's Picks" awards in several catagories including "#1 best lyrics - all time" for the song song 'bigger trees' (of the 2,500 songs in the 'Acoustic' genre,)
