Hello Chaz,
I like your music. However, it is not coming through very well. Compared to the other tunes I listen to on Broadjam, yours is low in volume and has a high noise level. I would hate to think that it would sound like this when you sent one in for a contest or a call from Broadjam. Something must be wrong with your equipment or the method you are using when you are uploading your music to Broadjam.
Respectfully, Turner Pippin

Interestingly I just got to review a second song from your stash. What are the chances, eh? I wonder if there is some way I can help? It seems there might be either an issue witht he compression algorithm that you're using to convert to mp3, or maybe the issue is in mixing/mastering? It's really detracting from the power of your work, friend, and we all need to help each other make out millions here. If there is anything I can do to help you with the audio, please let me know. I just listened to Tennessee Dreamin' which is a HUGE song, well sung, nicely put together from what I could tell, but the audio just didn't do you or any of the artists justice. Please please please let me know if I can help.

'Loved by you' is a very nicely written and produced song..could be a country hit, maybe add some pedal steel ? excellent players and vocals. reminiscent to me of O. Newton John back in the day.

Thanks much chaz! I recorded this one as a ballad for my rock bands CD, but you're right, it would make a decent country song. i just happen to know great local pedal steel player also. Maybe I'll do a re-work and see how it turns out. Thanks again.

Thank you for your review and comments of my song "Stefan" the fact that you know "laughing boy" and used that in a same area comparison blows me away..i was a Hall n' Oates fan before they were "famous"..saw them at the Rainbow /Sunset Strip 1977. 'Stefan' was recorded WAAAY back in 1990 on 4 track in my living room..my intention was to make people aware of home child abuse and mean parents , which today is always in the spotlight , but not as much back then. anyways, i thank you for the review and i have always liked Daryl & Jon since about 1974.."abandoned luncheonette"

Yes, I have an old scratched up copy of "Abandoned Luncheonette", and I refuse to replace it. I don't know if it was theit first, but it is my favorite. That record shows the diverse genres that Hall and Oates play, and other people like that record when I play it. Again Chaz, you have surprised me. You seem to have a "Jack of all trades" thing going on in your song writing. That version of Stefan is unique, and I wonder how it would sound recorded today; probably very nice. That music from then seems to have been lost in the shuffle, almost as if it never had it's 15 minutes of fame. I have always hoped it would come back. When I hear a tune like Stefan, it does shed some light on the possibility. Scott.

Hey Chaz

Saw your dialogue with Earl Webb so any thoughts Earl gives you is great advice ! I just thought i'd comment on your take about no royalties for TV/Film. The word "royalties" is just a word anyway but as you are aware it is best known for CD or Pure Audio sales. There are similiar words like "back end" fees for TV. A Master Use fee is paid to you just for the use of your submitted song. In film/tv, the master use fee is paid to affix the audio recording (your song or a part of it) to picture. In CD sales, this fee is paid for the use of the master in a cd compilation. An example of this is when a TV show uses a song, then the show creates a soundtrack for sale, the production company will have to license the master again for additional $ to you. They will also have to license the composition again which would be a Mechanical fee paid per unit manufactured.

For any audio/video production, you have 2 fees paid (master and synchronization). The "Sync" fee is paid to you for the use of your tune in audio/visual productions only.
The same Music Supervisors who affix your song for TV use will fill in a "Cue Sheet". This will detail your song usage including the title of the song, the writers and their splits, the publishers and their splits; and the length of use of the song. Cue sheets are then supplied to the performing rights organization (PRO like ASCAP) as well as to the supplier of music, so that performance royalties can be paid to you.

The Performance Royalties are generated when your song is broadcast on radio, television, live event in a concert hall, or even in a restaurant (in some countries internet and theater performances also count), US performance rights organizations such as ASCAP, BMI and SESAC collect annual fees from the "broadcaster" for the "performance" or use of the compositions, and then distribute the revenue to the writers and publishers (50% of the fee going to each). Your PRO has their own way of calculating the fee owed to you and your publisher based on the cue sheet, type of venue, length of use, number of uses, ratings, and a variety of other factors. For television, these royalties are paid each time the show broadcasts the song, and are separate from the Master Use and Synchronization. For film, in the US, these royalties are only paid once the film is broadcast on television and are separate from the Master Use and Synchronization. In order to receive these royalties, you must be a member of one of the US PROs as a writer, as a publisher, or as a writer/publisher. If you register yourself as a publisher only, you will not receive writer royalties. If you are a writer, and do not want to setup a publishing entity as well, you must alert the PRO that you want to be assigned copyright control, which means they will forward the publishing revenue to you. If you are a writer, and someone else owns the publishing you will only need a writer registration.

Hope this helps. The thing is not to get caught up with the "upfront money" for a Submission here on BJAM. Some are very small or nothing at all. However, the "Sync Fees" and "Performance Royalties" may make it worth it over time for your submission. And maybe a "foot in the door" with some Music Supervisors.

Regards

Steve Dafoe

" L.O.V.E." was done in 1992 on yamaha 4 track.. actually just wrote/recrded it for shitz and giggles..it' too long and very sloppy..didn't put heart & soul into it. was actually my idea of a 'whiteboy' wanna' be hippity hop tune! i still play "sweet soul" about once a month! your voice likeness to mike mc donald is uncanny..no offense for the comparison, we all wish to be unique, and YOU are anyways!! question : have you ever had any songs "placed" /licensed? if i was "king of the A&R world" i'd sign you yesterday! peace and best wishes...

Well thankyou Chaz.. is there no way you can get those songs of yours re recorded, it would be worth the time spent, a lot of the stuff I did earlier on was done very cheaply on a Boss 1180 ($500) it's surprising what you can achieve with very little when you have to!
In answer to your Q, apart from the cool friends and collaborators I have met through Broadjam (which in my opinion is worth the sub) I have achieved absolutely nothing through Broadjam, and in honesty don't expect to.
I have other 'things' happening but that's involved a lot of hard work and slog! there's no easy way Chaz.

Hi Chaz, the 'RN' is another website that I post music on similar to broadjam but it seems to have a more international flavor and doesn't have the same base of license opportunities.
I discovered several really great artists from all over the world browsing and searching the first couple of months I was there. So RNfun was my attempt at an imaginary jam session with a few of those different artists.
The interesting challenges for that piece included representing the diversity of those different artists acurately (way different playing styles and types of music) I was shooting for a composition that utilized similar instruments, playing styles to include phrasing and such that those artists had posted up on that site. I think I got that one pretty well. I heard back from all of those artists and every single one thought so too.
The ending was influenced in part by a band called Born of Scars, which is well worth checking out by the way. One of the band members, Pietro recommended Broadjam to me. He has some really nice classical pieces posted here on Broadjam which are fantastic.
One other crazy oddball challenge in RNfun came from a discussion with another artist around the time I was working on RN about another piece I wanted to write combining Gregorian Chant with a jazz fuzion/rock sound.
One of the RN artists I was trying to represent is a phenominal bass player from eastern europe and he was hard to find a place for, so he wound up 'placed' in the section right before the guitars with distortion. I wound up with a sonic 'hole' and was looking for a sound to fill it and was able to use the gregorian chant as a pad layer beneath. So that was kind of fun too.
The bass was me on a Warwick 5 string and I'm pretty sure it is strung with some midling Fender strings or somesuch, the sound you hear comes from inserting three instances of ProTools 7-band equalizer on the audio track and oodles of track automation. If I recall correctly there is one part where there's a synth layer (moog probably) underneath that I started with cause the bass reverb send was gumming up the works and I was looking for some resonance on the tail.. long story short, bunch of knob twiddling resulted. Cool sound though.
Yes, was/am very fond of Weather Report. But I like lots of different styles.... I'm guessing I like some styles that I haven't even heard yet. I enjoy the style of your works too.

hey Bryant! listened to Gypsy again..it's a very notable and interesting piece..what instrument(s) are you playing? i've been around long enough to know Mingus, Coltrane and the others..they would have dug this! when i said 'frantic' it's only cuz' this style gives that feel to some listeners..i.e. it's fast, swirling, and thought provoking.. i think this would make a great soundtrack/film song for an appropriate genre. best wishes man! feep it up.

Hi Chaz sorry missed this comment. Instuments.. keys, guitars/bass/violin/drums.
Everything is me with exception of a synth patch which is hammers on piano strings. I was looking for some sound which could represent the goofy avant guard looking around for something/anything to beat on 'spontanious-and-then-there-was-mus ic' type thing that crops up sometimes in gypsy jazz and settled on that sound since I had decided on the sonic space being a club type thing rather than a music festival stage of sorts (figured some form of piano would be around in most clubs).
I liked that sound so much I've actually picked up an old beater piano on Craigslist to tear up and turn it into a huge hammer dulcimer.
At this point over 50% of the tracks originally recorded are muted.
Still not satisfied with it though.... muting so many of the tracks gets rid of some 'clutter' but loses some interesting parts that originally were intended to give the piece the "We Are The World" of gypsy jazz-sounds.
Not sure how it'll turn out in the end but I do really appreciate the encouragement.
Cheers.

Thanks for reviewing my song Gypsy Jazz Pie. The reference to some great jazz artists is indeed well received.
In this piece I'm trying to somewhat capture the influence of early Gypsy Jazz on a century of several genre of popular music. Personally I am not satisfied with the works current state and have it set to be reviewed with the hope of receiving suggestions on how to improve it. After its first set of reviews I stripped away most of the precussion which was a bit heartbreaking because of the work that went into making sure the right instruments were there playing appropriate parts etc... Perhaps you could lean over and ask Paula for some input on ways it could be improved? (slick name change btw)

Otherwise, when you say "frantic" do you refer to the whole piece? a section perhaps? Are the period correct instruments playing counterpoint to each other using period correct phrases too much perhaps? Was it a matter of tempo? Changes between parts of arrangement?
In regards to arrangement: considering the theme, would it be better to arrange differently? What exists now is like a 'pie' with crusty stuff on the outside and gooey stuff in the middle (an attempt at arranging that reflects the song name.. crazy I know), how would you change it?

Quality of Instrumentation... what could be improved? Are the choices not period correct to the phrases and styles being played at the various points of the arrangement? How would you suggest I change things to improve the piece?

You didn't find the work original? When I came up with the idea to write this piece I checked on the internet to see if I could find any pieces that attempted to sum up the century long influence of gypsy jazz on popular music. And while I found lots of gypsy jazz I didn't find any one work that attempted such a thing. If you know of a few please advise. Not being a smart-ass here, frankly having attempted the thing, I'm pretty sure it'd be rare.. and more-over if someone has attempted it.. I genuinely would like to hear what they came up with.

I'm asking these questions because of the large number of "3" type scorings suggests that you thought the piece could be better. OK, so what would make it better? The BJ guidelines for reviewing suggest the reviewer explains their marks.
Thanks in advance. We're connected so if you'd prefer maybe we could use the BJ internal mail rather than comments.
