Shueh-li (Shelley) is an electronic musician & recording artist with one foot in the world of musicology & the other on the concert stage. This Australian born Singapore artist, who lives in the USA, is a multi-instrumentalist, world-class thereminist, producer & show designer.

In a career that has spanned three albums and countless show productions, Shueh-li is best known for layering, theremins, tin-whistles, guqin, exotic synth and vocal lines, to create bombastic productions. She defies the pigeon-hole, and has written everything from love songs to fusion-pop, theatrical soundscapes to prog-rock, showcasing her fresh yet poignant brand of ancient art meets new world technology/east meets west sound.

Songwriter - Producer

Shueh-li is best known for the way she melds electronic-pop-rock-jazz, her fav sci-fi instrument (the theremin) with synths, tin-whistle, piano, guqin & sound design.
Having written, recorded & produced 3 CDs under the Xenovibes concept, Australian born Shueh-li (Shelley) aka 'Singapore's 1st & only diva of the theremin' has stepped into a new musical chapter, bringing with her, her delightfully fresh yet poignant brand of ancient art meets new technology/east meets west sound. Though she has been compared to such self produced artists as Kate Bush & Madonna, Shueh-li's sound is very much her own.
Shueh-li is also founder & leader of Xenovibes (electronic-progressive band.) Artists who have worked with her include Dean Parks, Shelley Carrol, Curtis Randall, Chuck Smith, Mike McKinney.

Reviews - Quotes

ThereminVox.com - 'Music From Another Land' by Valerio Saggini, editor [Italy 2007]
"It's not uncommon to hear albums by thereminists that master divinely the instrument but are simply not able to produce themselves. This is not the case of Shueh-li who really 'plays' the studio like a musical instrument itself. Shueh-li is an inspired artist with a solid background who has brought fresh ideas in the theremin field."

The Straits Times - 'Singapore's 1st & only Diva of the Theremin' by Tan Shzr Ee, Arts Correspondent [Singapore 2004]
"Shueh-li is producer, performer, concert administrator and artist all rolled into one. But for want of a better description, the Australian-trained sound artist is actually a professional music technologist."

Dallas Museum of Art - Josh Rose [USA 2005]
"I wanted to express my thanks and gratitude of your amazing performance. The programme was astounding...we had a record-breaking attendance of 4,380 (people)."

Andrew Frye, Producer (Charlie Pride) [USA]
"I usually find that when people combine world instruments with pop music, the result is hardly listenable. Shueh-li has managed to combine many styles and instruments to create something very accessible to pop music fans. Reminds me of Basia."

Electronic Musician Magazine - 'No Barriers - The international Synth Pop of Xenovibes'
by Mike Levine, Executive Editor [USA 2008]
"What do you get when you mix synthesizers, theremins, traditional folk instruments and electronic drums with a multitalented, multicultural, classically trained keyboardist (with a degree in electronic music) and a NY jazz drummer? The answer is Xenovibes!"

Arts Monthly - Review of Xenovibes the show in Singapore by Karee Dahl [Australia 2004]
"I felt like I was in New York or Chicago...the energy and want of the crowd because the performance was so addictive and interesting. This was one of the first events I've experienced in Singapore over the past 6 years that engaged a respect firstly for its cutting edge contemporary artistic exploration, and secondly a parallel high entertainment. Shueh-li is a truly amazing talent; informed, professional, warm, diverse, exciting, inspiring."

Automatictext.com [Germany 2004]
"Only a few people were literally able to handle the instrument as far as composition and music making were concerned. Important players and composers of the Theremin are Russian Lydia Kavina ... and Australian born Singapore artist Shueh-li."

COMPASS Newsletter interview [Singapore 2008]
"Your type of music is unique and very different, cutting edge..."

UsaProgMusic interview by Jill Hughes-Kirtland, editor [USA 2007]
"I really enjoyed your responses! One of the most thorough interviews I've received so far and I learned a lot from it!"

The Business Times - 'Local Theremin Virtuoso Blazes New Ground'
by Chris Lim, Entertainment Correspondent [Singapore 2009]
"If there's one thing that Xing Paths (CD) demonstrates as a whole, it's that Ong isn't a one-trick pony."
Xing Paths was rated 'A' in this CD review.
