RAY WAS BORN ON APRIL 22 IN VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA., THE YOUNGEST OF TWO SONS BY KATHERINE AND GEORGE GRIFF.
AT THE AGE OF EIGHT RAY, HIS BROTHER KEN AND THREE OTHER LOCAL KIDS FORMED A BAND CALLED THE WINFIELD AMATEURS. RAY SANG AND PLAYED DRUMS IN THE BAND.
IN THE LATE 50'S , RAY AND HIS BAND THE BLUE ECHO’S APPEARED AS THE OPENING ACT FOR JOHNNY HORTON ON A TOUR OF WESTERN CANADA.
IT WASN’T LONG BEFORE JOHNNY RECORDED RAY’S SONG “MISTER MOONLIGHT”. A SHORT TIME LATER JIM REEVES RECORDING ANOTHER OF RAY’S SONG’S “WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE”. JIM WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN RAY MOVING TO NASHVILLE IN 1964.
RAY WAS THE FIRST COUNTRY ARTIST IN NASHVILLE TO PRODUCE HIS OWN RECORDS WITH SUCH HITS AS “MORNING AFTER BABY LET ME DOWN”, “PATCHES” AND “YOU RING MY BELL”. SOME OF RAY’S HITS AS A WRITER FOR OTHER ARTIST’S INCLUDE “STEP ASIDE”, “BABY”, “WHERE LOVE BEGINS”, “WHO’S GONNA PLAY THIS OLD PIANO” AND “IT COULDN’T HAVE BEEN ANY BETTER”. THE WRITER OF OVER 2000 SONGS, RAYS IS TH RECIPIENT OF MORE THAN 100 ASCAP AND BMI AWARDS WITH OVER 40 PLUS CHARTED RECORDS AS AN ARTIST, WRITER, PRODUCER AND PUBLISHER.
BESIDES TOURING THROUGHOUT THE 60'S, 70'S AND 80'S, RAY HOSTED HIS OWN TELEVISON SHOW. HE HAS BEEN INDUCTED INTO BOTH THE CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME AND THE CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF HONOR. IN 2004 BECAME AFFILIATED WITH SOCAN AS A SONG WRITER AND MUSIC PUBLISHER MOVING MORE THAN 700 OF HIS RECORDED TITLES TO THAT
SOCIETY.
