After studying and playing Jazz bass for 30 years, it became clear to me that Jazz did not evolve out of thin air. A mixture of styles and influences came together as a result of the implementation of The Black Codes in the USA in 1898. The state of Louisiana was sold back to the American government by the French. The Creole community, who up until then had lived as Aristocrats, were reclassified as Black and hence became the musical partners of itinerant Blues players. Mix in a little Quadrille style military syncopated drumming, add some Gospel and a little Appalachian, and lo and behold a Jahass, a West African Wolof word....a big mix... un melange!!
The principles of Jazzing up a tune had to have come from somewhere. Jelly Roll Morton used to walk to the docks in New Orleans and listen to the Stevedores sing and whistle tunes as they unloaded their cargo from West Africa.
Having researched the whole subject for 1 year on the Internet, I set out to find the Holy Grail in January 2005. Sure enough ...... in the village of Brikama in The Gambia, West Africa, there was Tata Dinding. A man who is living proof that a Jahass of the finest West African talent is at the roots of all of the World Music that has evolved in the last 100 years.
City Walls Music Publishing is dedicated to the future of West African Music.
We are deeply indebted to our partners at Broadjam. Anyone based in Madison Wisconsin gets the vote. The 3rd American President, Thomas Madison, was completely committed to the constitution. The sanctity of the separation of power between the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary is at the very heart of true Democracy.
We shall bring that spirit to our partnerships in West Africa. Every 99 cent download produces 60 cents direct to the African Artist. 20 dollars buys a sack of rice and feeds 30 people for one month.
Thankyou for your participation in helping to build the cultural future of West Africa.
