Story Behind The Song
ahhh, nice shower and a beer after work. hey, at least i got a job in these tough times, eh? i'm glad.
Well, the song was about a girl, a first love. Since we lived in New York at the time, i was initially trying to compare our relations to a subway. At first the lyrics involved the train going back and forth on the same route from end point to end point, never arriving at any destination, but only going back and forth and back and forth from Astoria to Delancy to Astoria to Delancy to Astoria, etc. the passengers desiring to get off after a while. This idea died off. Because life is not a rut, it is linear, it changes, things happen.
In the second version the lyrics were broader, not literal.
The first stop - a teardrop
The second stop - a stiff drink
The third stop - a hot shot huh? look at where it got you.
The fourth stop - stiff drunk, alone, in the dark, fumbling for the handle, to some door that ... whats behind it? where the hell am i anyway? what is this room i'm in? where am i going?
I always felt a sence of anticipation about that final line, like, well, i'm sticking my fucking hand out and twisting the damn knob and it'll open and we'll find out.
The chorus came together with the assistance of a friend - it came together on the fly -
Its spilling on the pavement/so i hope that you can swim man/its pulling you in man/its just like quicksand/is it true that I sunk down to you/and then came back
...and then it comes back.
I never really got into the pain and sorrow and all that. If I did it would have been, "i can't stay still but i can't move, my heart has sunk into my stomach, i think i'm going to vomit my own heart." But, y'know, the song is not about that. Thats why over time the word 'step' replaced the word 'stop'
