Daddy Had A Still

Story Behind The Song

I was trying to learn to fingerpick, failed terribly at the songs I was trying to learn, so like I usually do I decided, well then I'll write one I can play. Passed that along to Producer Mark Riddick who wrote a terrific chorus got all the right musicians and a fantastic vocalist to turn my attempt into the music it was meant to be. By the way, my Daddy never had a still it's just one of times when the story pops out of the ether and you have to write it down because you were probably there somewhen and know it's right.

Lyrics

Daddy had a still way out in the woods
The Government Men never caught him with the goods
When the Revenuers came Daddy ran to get his gun
I never seen him Laugh like when the Revenuers run
When the Revenuers came Daddy ran to get his gun
I never seen him Laugh like when them Revenuers run

Granddaddy taught us to cook the mountain dew
Starlight corn and moonbeam sugar will do
A pinch of Mamas yeast and the spirits start to rise
In the morning a sip will put a gleam in your eyes
A pinch of Mamas yeast and the spirits start to rise
In the morning a sip will put a gleam in your eyes
C G D
Mmmmm it's a living and it ain't to bad
Make a little drink smoke a little smoke
And in the morning do it all again
A man's gotta have a little somethin to turn to
C G A
When the world's too big you need somethin to hang on to
G D
And that's why I do what I do

A little mason jar can only hold so much luck
Sooner or later you gotta live with what you've done
Visiting hours can only last so long
Til the world gets small and your time is done
Daddy went to sleep in the jail and never woke up
So I put another log on the fire and went to work

Mmmmm it's a living and it ain't to bad
Make a little drink smoke a little smoke
And in the morning do it all again
A man's gotta have a little somethin to turn to
When the world's too big you need somethin to hang on to
And that's why I do what I do
