Story Behind The Song
Dysthymia is a new song, an anthem, for overcoming long-term depression. It is the first single release of US-Australia band, Voodoo in Blue. The song tells the story of a friend's journey, the triumph over this illness, through the realization that the 'darkness' is not your enemy.
As singer-songwriter Kyle McMenemy explains: "The song is an artistic portrayal of how the 'menace' meets the 'mender' using a paradoxical music theme; with a somewhat dark and foreboding guitar and bass line juxtaposed with a bright beat and positive melody."
When you realize that it is completely okay - as the song says- that 'sometimes the sun doesn't show', there is strength in knowing that the darkness is not your enemy. Our friend's journey has been to embrace this and stop blaming the darkness.
The opening verse - "Hurt clawed at your insides and tore away at your brain; But you sent it to die in its rage and broke it's brutal reign" - briefly has the narrator pointing out the mental anguish of the character - and then highlighting how they had vanquished their punishing foe. The chorus is the character simply stating that they've left the station of depression and won't be back. The bridge to chorus that has the character "shining iridescence at the sun" finds them smiling in the presence of the sun and so doing away with the darkness in night.
This is the description of the character having come through this illness, to find the very light that alluded them to the dampening dark of depression. We know that the sun lives in the abyss of darkness and yet, look how brightly it shines. We all can shine amongst darkness. You are too late, Dysthymia.

Lyrics
Hurt clawed at your insides and tore away at your brain
But you sent it to die in its rage and broke it's brutal reign
Your eyes are shining, shining iridescence at the sun
That now finds you smiling, smiling in its presence
All nite be gone
You're too late, you're too late dysthymia
Lie in wait, lie in wait but I won't come
Don't chase the dream, the dream not the dream that chases you
Don't be spooking poltergeists that your mind gave stillbirth to
Your eyes are shining, shining iridescence at the sun
That now finds you smiling, smiling in its presence
All nite be gone
You're too late, you're too late dysthymia
Lie in wait, lie in wait but I won't come
My life's been concentrating on the trees I could not climb
Standing on the ground looking up wondering why life's this unkind
But I came to know
It's just that sometimes the sun don't show
Your eyes are shining, shining iridescence at the sun
That now finds you smiling, smiling in its presence
All nite be gone
You're too late, you're too late dysthymia
Lie in wait, lie in wait but I won't come
