Lyrics
THE USUAL JOE
Copyright 2002 by Valerie DeLaCruz and Brad Cotter
Somehow he listened to everybody else
As he took the bottles off the shelf
I often wondered how Joe found time for me
Most folks, when they came in here
With their minds fixed on a glass of beer
Little did they know
The man behind the bar
Was much more than you could see
For just a few bucks a pour
Your poor soul could be
Cleansed
By the sermon that he didn’t have to preach
The lessons he never had to teach
Between the mixers and the ice
A humble sage with great advice
Oh Lord I miss him so…
But when I get to heaven I know
I’ll have the usual Joe
No one thought until he passed away
To ask Joe what he had to say
About his life, his loves, his family
When I went to pay my last respects
There could not have been one seat left
I must admit, it was a sight to see
Even the undertaker cried that day
I think everybody left that sacred place
Cleansed
By the sermon that he didn’t have to preach
The lessons he never had to teach
Among the mixers and the ice
A humble sage with great advice
Oh Lord I miss him so…
But when I get to heaven I know
I’ll have the usual Joe
Somehow he listened to everybody else
As he took the bottles off the shelf
