Now High, Now Low, Now Found

Story Behind The Song

Chewing over major-key, 4/4 version of The King of the Fairies, with an idea to write something about stepson. The chance to kill off a nice young character in the first verse proved too strong to resist. Voila.

Song Description

Three instances of fatal misconception: in romantic love, in filial love, in political trust. Nothing is EVER what it seems; there is ALWAYS something behind you.

Lyrics

A four-wheeled cart, the wainwright's art,
rocks and rolls and goes and goes;
riding above, the perfect love:
not high, not low, not found.

The early start, the open heart,
a horse in hand that knows the road:
in every way a perfect day
to meet the boy from town.

Then, on the road, the one that's known,
a careless step, unlucky stone;
cart a-turn, the driver thrown?
now, how can this be so?

The Wheel came round to kiss the ground,
stars go up, and stars come down,
and where we go is where we're bound:
now high, now low, now found.

A big, big, noise, a big man's joy?
break out cigars and count your toys:
the big man's wife just brought to life
the baddest lad in town.

And when daddy's joy, his big, bad boy,
mans his boots and strides away,
his mommy knows the soft unshown:
some high, some low, some found.

Then, on the road, God above
chooses him for sinless love;
the boy, attending, hears enough
to know he can't go home.

The Wheel came round to kiss the ground,
stars go up, and stars come down,
and where we go is where we're bound:
now high, now low, now found.

Silent guns: the fighting's done?
they did their best, and they never won.
So much to build, without the will:
a clock that's all run down.

Then The Hero comes, the trains all run,
he wants more war?they want his son,
and by the end they've learned to bend:
now high, now low, now found.

'Cause on the road, the road of might,
there came a tunnel, black as night:
"What's ahead, now, what's in sight?"
and not a one could see

the Wheel come round to kiss the ground,
stars go up, and stars come down,
and where we go is where we're bound:
now high, now low, now found.
