Story Behind The Song
Its the story of a dysfuntional relationship, the way I see it anyway. He's trying to prove himself to her following some history between them. He's trying to tell her to forget about the past and he wants to prove he loves her. This is also the first time he's actually committed to her, so it's a huge life event.
Song Description
I'm a huge Monkees fan, some of the best songwriters in the world have written their songs. This was my chance to update the song that got me turned onto the Monkees during their reunion in the '80s.

Lyrics
VERSE
You always say you like my style;
You say I'm tough and kind of wild.
Am I too much for you to tame?
I swear this time
It's not a game.
PRECHORUS
I've known a lot of girls;
No, this I won't deny.
I'll give our love,
I'll give it more than a try.
CHORUS
That was then
This is now.
Let me prove my love, girl;
I'll make you proud.
I never made
This kind of vow.
But that was then and this is now.
VERSE
I've led a thousand lives, it seems;
There's been a lot of broken dreams.
My mind, it just swept love aside.
But you broke me down,
You've put me wise.
PRECHORUS
I doubted all compassion,
But you showed me the score.
I can't doubt it,
I don't doubt it no more
CHORUS
That was then
This is now.
Let me prove my love, girl;
I'll make you proud.
I never made
This kind of vow.
But that was then and this is now.
CHORUS
That was then
This is now.
Let me prove my love, girl;
I'll make you proud.
I never made
This kind of vow.
But that was then and this is now.
But that was then and this is now.
