Its the story of a dysfuntional relationship, the way I see it anyway. He's trying to prove himself to her following some history between them. He's trying to tell her to forget about the past and he wants to prove he loves her. This is also the first time he's actually committed to her, so it's a huge life event.

I'm a huge Monkees fan, some of the best songwriters in the world have written their songs. This was my chance to update the song that got me turned onto the Monkees during their reunion in the '80s.
