Story Behind The Song
A couple embracing change after a life time in one place.
Song Description
Edward Hopper's painting "Sun In An Empty Room" was generally described as all of the things that could be, such as life's possibilities. This ekphrastic song is the basis for any lingering doubts in the couple's minds about a major life change. While Hopper stated that he wanted to paint the sun in an empty room, this painting was one of his final paintings, perhaps reminiscent of his impending death.

Lyrics
Sun in an Empty Room
By Joe Strouse
Fresh paint on the wall
and new carpet in the hall
We'll be settling in here soon
It's a stunning, simple scene
so silent and serene like the
sun in an empty room
The boxes of our lives take a day to arrive
So we can play this afternoon
'cause the peace in this place
warms my heart and my face like the
sun in an empty room
Let's get our coats and go explore the neighborhood
Let's see what adventures wait ahead
Maybe we'll find a small cafe to call our own
Grab a bite and stroll back home
Until the truck appears, let's appreciate we're here
And celebrate this honeymoon
Endless possibilities of what our lives will be
Like the sun in an empty room
(sax solo)
Let's get our coats and go explore the neighborhood
Let's see what adventures wait ahead
Maybe we'll find a small cafe to call our own
Grab a bite and stroll back home
Until the truck appears, let's appreciate we're here
And celebrate this honeymoon
Endless possibilities of what our lives will be
Like the sun in an empty room
Like the sun in an empty room
