Lady of the Mist

Stephen A. Brunette

I'm sittin' at the Ritz one day, watchin' nothin' on TV
when a Lady in a Mist blew in and sat down next to me.
She wore a fish net body stocking, a silver cross, a scarlet cape,
her eyes and hair changed color as she watched my fantasies awake.
She ordered us two waters, I watched 'em turn to wine.
She said, "I like my spirits fresh." I said, "You won't like mine."

She said, "I've walked this earth forever, known by many names,
visible to all who see that Love is not a game.
Some call me Wisdom, some call me Sweet Sophia,
some mistake me for a whore when I dress this way to please ya'.
Some call me Mary, some call me Magdalena,
if you're lookin' for true love, I'm here to claim ya'."

I turned back to the TV, asked Ben to bring my tab.
This babe was gorgeous, but clearly she'd gone mad.
Must be a new church in town, sent her out to 'vangelize.
I'm sure she'll save a lost soul, or two, dressed in that disguise.
But I'm done with crazy ladies, I lose my heart too fast.
I'm lookin' for true love, but crazy love is not meant to last.

I turned back to wish her well, and much to my surprise,
she's in a diamond tiara with a starry-sky third eye!
She's in a silky evenin' gown, just floatin in her chair . . .
The room had softly faded in the mist beyond her hair . . .
I felt the presence of a love I'd never known . . .
I said, "I think I've found the one. I'm yours. Take me home."

She said, "You've been lookin' for the one, you search for her in many,
but still you're all alone with your illusions and your memories.
You think about yourself so much, yourself is all you've got.
I'm here to save your soul. Set you free to love, or not.
My spirit fills the soul of everyone on earth.
If you're lookin' for true love, forget yourself. Serve my soul in the girl."

She disappeared before my eyes. A mist blew out the door.
Ben brought the tab, I said, "Who was that? Where did she go?"
He looked around, looked at me, and said, "I didn't see."
I said, "You didn't see that Lady in the Mist floatin' right here next to me?"
He looked at me with deep concern, said, "Should I call a cab?"
He handed me my tab. "I'll Be Back" is all it said.

This story may sound crazy, may sound like a fantasy,
but I believe the Lady of the Mist is comin' back for me.
I glimpse her now and then, in a pair of tender eyes,
trapped behind a veil of lost dreams and alibis,
or in a pair of wild eyes, distracted by the night,
searching in the darkness with the glow of an inner light.

So if you see me at the Ritz, just starin' into space,
don't worry. I'm just checkin' out the place, just in case
a mist blows through the front door who won't need no ID.
I'll know her when I see her, I know she'll know me.
I don't know how she will appear until she's in my sight.
I might not be tonight, but that's alright, I've got the rest of my life.

You see, she's walked this earth forever, known by many names,
visible to all who see that Love is not a game.
I glimpse her now and then, in a pair of tender eyes,
trapped behind a veil of lost dreams and alibis,
or in a pair of wild eyes, distracted by the night,
searching in the darkness with the glow of eternal light.
