They came from the highlands the bothies and glens the life blood of Scotland the bravest of men
D Em A7 D Em A7
To fight for their country their families and friends their leaving for some foreign shore
Em D

2.
Wives are left wondering how they?ll survive hiding the tears in their eyes
Who tend the cattle and work in the fields who will be left to provide
Down in the harbour the boats riding high wait for the tide but the nets will stay dry
All that is left is to wave them goodbye the train leaves the station at four
All the young soldiers have gone to the war
3.
The church bells are ringing to call them to prayer A duty they cannot ignore
The choir is still singing to drown the despair sad eyes just stare at the floor
Letters are written the days pass so slow when will they return god only knows?
News is exchanged in the grocery store and life goes on just as before
All the young soldiers have gone to the war
4.
Saturday nights are just like the rest the young girls don?t dance anymore
A mother is holding a child to her breast and waits for the knock on the door
With so much to lose and nothing to gain she is not the only one feeling the pain
The waiting and worrying drives her insane her heart yearns to hold him once more
But all the young soldier has gone to the war
