Story Behind The Song
My Celtic ancestors had a tradition of playing pipes and drums. Both instruments are energized by skins stretched tight. There is a kind of beauty that comes from a place of stress; the boiler pressure behind the calliope, the diaphragm behind the great singer, the infant voice discovered in hunger. I grew up watching broadcasts of the New York Philharmonic on TV. Their oboist produced such beautiful sounds with such a pained grimace. I thought, "So that's what it must feel like to be a bagpipe."
