Story Behind The Song
Inspired by a girl I went to Cocoa Beach with during the summer of '05, that loves the ocean and longs for the freedom that the life of a Mermaid would give her. The idea of being a Mermaid in my mind, really just meant freedom from obligations and pressure that the world places on you. Freedom to be yourself and live as you choose, passionately. She told me this, I sat down and wrote what would become the 2nd verse and chorus there on a blanket on the beach. The rest I wrote over the next week. Thank you my little Mermaid! :)

She walks with me along the coastline
In her business suit with shoes in hand
She dreams aloud of taking her clothes off
To make an angel while lying in the sand
She tells me that she loves the ocean
Likes the waves crashing against her face
And sometimes when she's down and broken
She wishes one would take her away
And she says if she were a Mermaid
She could let her let her hair down
If she were a Mermaid
She would never never ever drown
She contemplates the path less traveled
And for a moment gets lost in what could be
Says she's lost at sea and drifing like a boat without a paddle
Sometimes you gotta swim to get to where you should be
And she says if she were a Mermaid
She could let her let her hair down
If she were a Mermaid
She would never never ever drown
The last time I saw her was there by the water
With her hair windblown and in her face
I blinked for a moment and when my eyes opened
I guess she caught a wave going the other way
Guess she caught a wave Caught a wave
Guess she caught a wave going the other way
And she said if she were a Mermaid
She could let her let her hair down
If she were a Mermaid
She would never never ever drown
If she were a Mermaid
She could let her let her hair down
If she were a Mermaid
She would never never ever drown
She tells me that she loves the ocean
Likes the waves crashing against her face
