Story Behind The Song
"Coventry Carol" made dramatic, worshipful, and exciting
Song Description
"Coventry Carol" describes Herod's "slaughter of the innocents" in pursuit of the Messiah. I changed it a lot to describe both the anguish of mothers whose children might be murdered, and the drama of Joseph and Mary's flight to Egypt to protect the Christ child. I added a sort of "worship chorus" to focus the song on Christ. I heard a lot of exotic and tribal production elements and threw those in to make it more otherworldly and exciting.

Lyrics
Coventry
(old English carol, adapted by Sarah Motes Ashley)
Lully, lullay,
thou tiny child
Bye bye, lully, lullay
Lully, lullay, thou tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay
Angel to Joseph came to say
Guard the anointed one
King Herod's men are out this night
seeking the holy son
CHORUS
This, this is our king
he is our Lord
Jesus Christ
love born to us all
born on a holy night
Whoa
That woe is me, poor child, for these
who cannot flee away
For thy parting nor say nor sing,
"Bye bye, lully, lullay."
chorus
whoa
