Suburban Foxes

Story Behind The Song

As I compose mainly choral work I was keen to experiment with other instrumental combinations, and in Suburban Foxes I have combined four of my favourite instruments.

Song Description

I have always felt that the saxophone has quite a haunting and eerie energy to it and so was well suited to illustrate the skulking and hunting nature of the fox. Similarly the suspensions in the strings add to the feel of the piece. The continuous bass and drums symbolise movement and the persistent nature of the fox. The use of the minor key and chromaticism demonstrates the slightly uncomfortable feeling of the piece, the sense that you are being watched by the fox!
