Under the Star

Story Behind The Song

The Christmas spirit came to me in late September 2009. It was on one of those days that started October cool then ended warm like August. Before the warm part came, I wondered what Christmas would be like this year, (completely skipping festive thoughts of Halloween and Thanksgiving.) I reminisced about happy memories from years past and new traditions I would start with my small family. My train of thought then focused on the anticipation of hearing my favorite Christmas songs unapologetically dominating the airwaves. My own Christmas song, "Under the Star" came to mind, and I recalled the spirit I felt while singing it in church and at holiday gatherings. It took me all of a split second for me to realize I could not picture a new holiday season without sharing my song and those feelings with all who would listen. I wrote "Under the Star" as a musical proclamation of the true meaning of Christmas. When I sat down with my acoustic guitar and wrote the first lyrical passages, I realized that for my first Christmas song, I had little interest in writing about anything less than the birth of Jesus Christ. I thought it would be interesting for the "voice" of the song to be a witness of the event and tell the story through his eyes. As this Christmas season begins, I would like to share with you my testimony of Jesus Christ through song. I hope it will bring happiness and joy to your home and family; that amidst all the hustle and festivity of the season, it can remind you of why it is we celebrate.

Lyrics

Under the Star

It just appeared in the sky as day turned to night
I said goodbye to my land and farewell to my wife
I gathered my gold and I saddled my beast
And I made my way off toward to the star in the east

Where is he that is born king of the Jews?
Will angels rejoice when they hear the good news?
What will I behold when I travel so far?
What will I finally find under the star?

I followed the star to a stable in old Bethlehem
And when I asked why Mary said, "There's no room at the inn."
I went to the manger and when I looked in
Well I fell to my knees and then I worshiped him

Before me the child who would die to save us
Well I gave him my gold, but it wasn't enough
I thought I heard angels rejoice from afar
Praising the Savior our King under the Star

The tear on my cheek found its way to the floor
And I failed to speak, but he heard every word
And I couldn't leave, but I backed out of sight
Into the silent night...

Behold here's the child who will die to save us
Well I gave him my gold, but it wasn't enough
I know I heard angels rejoice from afar
Praising the Savior our King under the Star
