Lyrics
The Old Mutt
I was hitching outside Delacroix
By the side of an old shack
By the I 10 Far as I could tell
As the cool of night finally arrived
I lay on my sleeping bag
And tried to get some shut eye for a while
Next morning when I woke up
I was not alone
An old mutt was laying next to me
He was so thin just a bag of bones
So I shared my pork and beans
And he wolfed them down without a by your leave
I rolled my bag up stuck my thumb out
Hoping against hope
With the old mutt still standing by my side
That dear old guy must have changed my luck
Coz soon we got a ride
A truck took us all the way to Lake Charles
Chorus
A dog will be your friend for life
He'll give you all his love
He'll expect nothing in return
He'll stay with you through thick and thin
Never leave you if he can
His love for you will forever burn
Verse
We settled down in an old shack
Spent all day 'neath a tree
Its shadow kept the old mutt cool all day
2 years went by and the old mutt died
And his shady spot out back
Became his final resting place
I tried and tried but I couldn't hide
The emptiness within
Time passed by but I couldn't fill the void
I'd had enough packed up my stuff
I was nothing without my friend
So I headed for my home in Delacroix
Chorus
A dog will be your friend for life
He'll give you all his love
He'll expect nothing more in return
He'll stay with you through thick and thin
Never leave you if he can
His love for you will forever burn
Verse
I'd been driving for some time
When I passed that same old shack
Where I first met my dear departed friend
It was strange indeed I felt the need
To stop off spend some time
Where we had met... just once again
I had some coke to quench my thirst
Started on pastrami/rye
I'd bought from the local 7-11
When a young mutt approached
It was the very likeness
Of my dear departed friend
Now in heaven
Chorus
A dog will be your friend for life
He'll give you all his love
He'll expect nothing more in return
He'll stay with you through thick and thin
Never leave you if he can
His love for you will forever burn
Verse
He's been with me ever since
Back in my hometown, Delacroix
In that spot beneath that same old tree
Though I don't have time for miracles
I really do believe
That old mutt has come back to me
Chorus
A dog will be your friend for life
He'll give you all his love
He'll expect nothing in return
He'll stay with you through thick and thin
Never leave you if he can
His love for you will forever burn
His love for you will forever burn
