Looking for Some Joy

Song Length 9:11 Genre Folk - Rock

Lyrics

Buckle up for the long ride people.
this is a song about everything and nothing at all
the meaning of life, death, and all in between
including sex, taxes, religion, trains, and the names of some towns in New Jersey but not necesarily in that order.

I go down to Penn Station waiting for a friend. Stand up under the big sign where the trains come in. Looking at the faces of the people passing by. I'm just trying to find a smile
It's true people are running for trains, so I guess it's natural that they don't look too happy. OK, maybe a few come out of McDonald's with the fries hanging out of their mouths... and sort of a smirk of self satisfactin, but I don't think it's the kind the Rolling Stones were singing about. Back when. You know back when. Maybe you don't know back when.

and the guy to my left he has a cell phone and a roll around suitcase and he's talking away to someone. Maybe there's the promise of getting laid later but you know it doesn't seem like that kind of conversation. Cause there's something about numbers something about the body language or the lack thereof and he doesn't have his hand anywhere but on that phone and that suitcase.

AND I'M LOOKING FOR SOME JOY IN THIS WORLD! REAL JOY!

While the guy to my right is trying to bum 90 cents, not a dime more not a dollar not a quarter not 5 dollars but 90 cents. And he's asking a very select group of people and maybe something in my eyes says I'm not going to give tonight. So even though I am the closest one to him, he doesn't ask me.
All I can do is stand here and observe the people with their floppybriefcases rushing to their pleasant homes in New Jersey. We're to meet at 8:30 now it's pushing 9, and I'm wondering if I've got this right. So I ask a man where else the New Jersey trains might meet. And he looks kinda funny at me
AND I'M LOOKING FOR SOME JOY IN THIS WORLD! SOME JOY!
people coming, people going, hardly a smile on a face that's showing. oops!big oops! now I'm not smiling. turns out the fine folks here are headed to long island ( I wonder if they know) oops!big oops! I thought I was smart. Turns out I'm an Oakland hayseed who only knows BART.
Semms that the sign I parked my butt under pointed to New Jersey way back in the rear. there's probably a moral in here somewhere.
(maybe you can help me look for it)
Just because I grew up in NJ doesn't mean that I would necessarily recognize that all the names on the Board are not New Jersey towns at all.

If we had more time I'd tell you a little story about growing up in New Jersey. And although I know you don't have time, I'd tell you about how when I was a kid, people would wander into my home town of fair lawn in their old buick and say kid, cause kid was what they called you then, hey kid how do I get to riverdale? and I'd say riverdale or rivervale, riverbank or riveredge ro riverton ro rivervale township, or oradell or the delaware water gap? cause you got to know where you want to go in New Jersey cause you might get there sooner than you think. Yeh you might get there sooner than you think.

People coming, people going, hardly a smi8le on a face that's showing. so upstairs I go to find my firend, leaving behind the man beggin 90 cents, the man not getting laid, the people with the floppy briefcase, the McDonald's smirks you name it, it's all behind me now. Now you know my tale of New York strife and woe, next time you go to the Big Apple you'll know all that I know, Keep track of the signs, the people rushing around and you'll do fine in that town.

AND I'M LOOKING FOR SOME JOY, LOOKING FOR SOMEJOY, I'M JUST LOOKING FOR SOME JOY

Meanwhile I think I'd better get my butt back to Oakland, hayseed that I am. Even San Francisco is looking pretty easy to megotiate now...if I could only reach her....
