Rail

Story Behind The Song

Inspired by a friend who, despited repeated failed attempts, was not giving up on themselves. Written especially for a cross country Vinyl Cafe show broadcast from The Canadian Via Rail train. Chosen in SHORE104 Top ten songs of summer.

Song Description

Rootsy train themed song about not giving up on yourself. Driving acoustic guitar with engine like brushes and piano. 'Sleep walking these rails..' the writer has been walking in a fog, losing the plot, failing at their goals. they have made repeated promises to themselves but never make it happen. but 'no more, no more' the chorus repeats 'put your ear to the rail, you can hear my love come down, where hearts and heros fail, I wont be turned around'. like a train they are finally unstoppable. it ends with the truest part ' and I know that I've been here before. and it's taken its toll on me, but I'm not giving up anymore, no i'm not giving up on me...".

RAIL

Written by Reid Jamieson
& Carolyn V. Mill

Put your ear to the rail,
You can hear my love come down

Where hearts and heroes fail,
I won't be turned around

Sleepwalking these rails,
I let the grass grow long

Oh my memory fails,
And I forgot my song

Black berries grow wild,
Smell of pitch in the sun

Weeds roll over my mind,
And they almost won

But I said - No more, No more,
No more, No more

No more, No more,
No more, No more

Put your ear to the rail,
You can hear my love come down

Where hearts and heroes fail,
I won't be turned around

Tearing up these weeds,
Blow the smoke in my stack

Sound of steel on Steel,
And there's no going back

Got a head full of coal,
Hear the lightning crack

Light a fire in my soul,
Get me back on track

Put your ear to the rail,
You can hear my love come down

Where hearts and heroes fail,
I won't be turned around

No more driving this blind,
time to throw that switch

Drives a spike in my mind,
Makes my fingers itch

You better get on board,
Or get out of my way

Hauling heavy and slow,
But I'm leaving today

No more, No more,
No more, No more

No more, No more,
No more, No more

And I know that Ive been here before

And it's taken it's toll on me

But I'm not giving up anymore

No I'm not giving up on me.
