Kansas (Pilgrim/Dunkle)

Story Behind The Song

This is a new collaboration with musical genius Billy Pilgrim, it's a spin off of Billy's song "After 8" great job Billy. The song is about an old jazz pianist who has just lost his wife and is moving back to Kansas to care for his ailing mom. He stops at a bar where he used to play piano and is waiting there for a pickup truck with his belongings.

Lyrics

Kansas, your fields of gold
Now I know I'm back home
Kansas, your fields of gold
Now I know I'm back home

Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas,
Your big Blue River keeps rolling on
While the cottonwoods sway to and fro
Where have the years gone
Where have they've gone

Does this old piano still play
Does this old piano still play our song
With a tear in my eye, I'll sing along
I'm waiting for the pickup truck to take me home
I've burned both candles for way too long
Kansas, your fields of gold
Now I know I'm home.

This majestic song about Kansas features numerous piano motifs and riffs over fairly simple/drone bass tones. That gives this a cinematic feel and "majestic" feel. The quick detune of the piano at 2:38 was a cool effect to illustrate the lyric. The vocal production is unique... almost an Elvis Costello-over-the-phone sorta vibe. Cool song that I could see being used in a specific TV/Film or Video production related to Kansas.
