Story Behind The Song
A ballad, in its original sense, is a song that tells a story. This story is about what might have been, or about long-forgotten memories.
Song Description
The original idea was for this song to be something of a cross between House of The Rising Sun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. But, as most songs do, it took on its own character. The symbolism of the sycamore tree and the interplay between the thoughts of Johnny and his lost love are left to the interpretation of the listener. But to the composer, there is a very particular series of events going on and the guitar is a character in the story, at least as much as the sycamore tree.
