TONY SONG.......A DIFFERENT DRUMMER

words & music
Phil Morrison

1) Yeah....I hear you.....get on down with them drums!
'Cause this song's about my Boston homeboy - Drummer Tony Williams
You all know who I'm talkin' about - He played with Miles ...Lifetime.....
Man.....Tony was baaaaad!

2) He'd play all over Roxbury...that's "Boston's 'hood"
Wally's...Connelly's...down Mass Ave....anyplace he could
His dad played tenor saxophone....Tillman...nicknamed "T"
Any club that played some jazz........that's where they'd be

3) Man....he was only 15 years old in Sam Rivers' band
Hal Galper, piano, ...Tony, drums... ..Phil Morrison, bassman
They played all over Boston...Friday nights in Harvard Square
In a Coffee House that featured jazz...all the hipsters were there
4) Sam was like a mentor....his music ...ahead of its time..and
Tony was always cookin' ....man.... he'd burn you blind
Originals and standards....what they did was awesome
With Tony... bishin' & bashin'....he studied with Alan Dawson

5) Now Beantown had its drummers....you all know Roy Haynes
Terri Lynn Carrington.....Clifford Jarvis......was insane
Just ask Chick Corea....he's from Boston too....
Bobby Ward, ...Bob Gulotti, ...Baggy Grant....just to name a few...but
6) And then to New York City....where Tony raised his game
On Max's recommendation...he joined Jackie McLean
Playin' with the major cats.....Herbie,... Wayne ...and Ron
But once he got with Miles....hey....from there... he was gone!
7) John McLaughlin, Mulgrew, Young, Pierce, Pasqua, Ira, Roney
A master class in music .....when they played with Tony
"Lifetime".... heard round the world....drummers were amazed
Mesmerized... while diggin' on the grooves that Tony played

8) But....This song is for Tony....just a small appreciation..'cause
He Inspired drummers for the new generation
We can still hear his playin'....and though he's physically gone
The spirit from his music will always remain strong....
The spirit from his music...will live...on and on!
