Story Behind The Song
Bill said that he was singing a song he'd written to Nancy Schimmel, a storyteller and songwriter in Berkeley, CA -- The song is called "Half a Loaf ", and it's about not wanting too much. She told him her mother, Malvina Reynolds, the great songwriter who wrote
"Turn Around" and "Little Boxes", used to say "Enough is a feast". He tried to write a song that Malvina would have written. No one wants to talk about class in the United States. But it's here, and the divisions are growing worse every day. It won't go away by our ignoring it. - Bill Harley
