Lyrics
THE FALLACIOUS CLOCK
The buzzing stops
She stretches and yawns
Feeling like a half-starched linen napkin Mounted on a table set for a King
She lies there
Studying the white light
As it sneaks in through
The tiny slits and spaces
And she strains to hear
The rhythmic chirping
Syncopated against the silence Distance and dim
Slowly she lifts herself
From the soft and cozy featherbed Washes off the day before
And puts on what no longer fits
She gulps down the coffee
Packs her stomach
With the dry wheat
And plants herself
Behind the plastic wheel
Which will take her
To a place
She doesn't really
Want to go to
She begins to race
Against her watch
Meticulously
Weaving through the traffic
Bumper to bumper
With others
Exactly like her
When she arrives She parks her car In the usual spot
Slams the door shut on the day Carries her brown bag
Up the heavy metal stairs And punches in
On the fallacious clock
That tries its best
To keep her there
