Story Behind The Song
"Cloud Structures' is my tribute and dedication to my late Father Michael John Carlson, who passed away peacefully in his bed on July 11 2015. He was my best friend, my confidante, and was always there for me when I needed him the most.
Musically, this album was my first attempt at a more 'traditional" sounding ambient album. I was particularly inspired by weather patterns and the motion of clouds above me when I composed the music, and I think that the final master (courtesy of the fine people at Black Dog Mastering) captured that feeling.
The album is divided into two parts. Part I is a more soundscape-orientated affair with no percussion and lots of evolving pad design. The twinkling arpeggio lines are the result of some free-form experimentation - instinct over intellect. Part II is a bit more involved than part I in that is utilizes percussion and an actual melody to create the vibe.
This album is a joy for me to listen to despite the obvious emotional baggage, and I learned a ton about sound design and motion in music. My main hope is that wherever Dad is, he listened to this music with a smile on his face :-)
