Nothing Lasts Forever (feat. Reece LaPlant)

Story Behind The Song

From Reece: "In 1991, at about eighteen, I lost two of my closest friends in separate car crashes, only months apart. On the Friday night I learned about the second death, I went to my parents' house, collapsed in front of their fireplace, and wrote the lyrics to this song. Mitch and I put the song together days later but a professional recording was never released. Even now, hearing it floods back the memories and can still bring me to tears; I remember how lost I felt. The song is nothing but heartbreak, pain, and loss--the last line of the bridge says it all: "Where'd my life go." At seventeen and eighteen you think you're indestructible, until you realize you're not; it felt like the loss of childhood innocence. While the original featured full instrumentation performed by the band Midian, this is the 2025 updated, unplugged, broken-down, emotional piano and vocal release under the new acoustic duo project named 'Waverly' in honor of the street where we first composed our music in the small basement studio of Mitch's childhood home.

[Verse 1]
Lying awake
In every sound it seems to me I hear your voice
Where could you be?
No mistake
A mystery that unfolds before my eyes
I'll set you free

[Chorus]
I hear the heavens crying and the thunder rolls above
The painful sight within my eyes I think I've had enough
I never once could understand the pain that you went through
But you do
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) but you do

[Verse 2]
People cry -
But that's just something in our lives, that we must bear
Feelings lie-
I hear the steps behind me, and I think you're there

[Chorus]
I hear the heavens crying and the thunder rolls above
The painful sight within my eyes I think I've had enough
I never once could understand, the pain that you went through
But you do
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) but you do

[Bridge]
(Ooh-ooh-ooh)
If I could take a moment and go back in time
I'd go back to forever and I'd never cross that line
I think that I'll just lay here and let my feelings take my soul
Where my life go
Where my life go
Where'd my life go----!

[Chorus]
I hear the heavens crying and the thunder rolls above
The painful sight within my eyes I think I've had enough
I never once could understand the pain that you went through
But you do
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) but you do
