Story Behind The Song
There's a red rock Cinder Road that I drive on occasionally in Central Oregon that just had to eventually make it into one of my songs. I had the idea for a couple years before I ever wrote the song. I had to wait patiently for this song to emerge, though. I had the general concept early on but the story took quite some time to develop. Because this has such personal meaning to me, I didn't want to rush the writing of this one. I knew in time it would come to me. Cinder Road is a real road, but not by that name, and is full of great memories for me.
Song Description
Cinder Road is a song about a time and place that is emphasized by a gravel road made of red cinder rock that leads both away from and back to that special place. The song is really a metaphor. While it can mean anything to the listener, to me "her lonely heart" and "the vision of her smile" are merely references to that place and time.

CINDER ROAD
Red rock two lane stretchin? time between her lonely heart and mine
Tryin? to make ends meet I?m always on the go
I relive memories by the mile, but it?s the vision of her smile
That keeps me rollin? down that lonesome cinder road
Cinder road takes me so far from home
Gonna spend the night alone
On my mind a heavy load
Patiently, waitin? with a heart of gold
Is the one I?ve grown to know
Who?s there for me, at the end of that lonesome cinder road
Cinder road takes me so far from home
Gonna spend the night alone
On my mind a heavy load
Patiently, waitin? with a heart of gold
Is the one I?ve grown to know
Two hearts as one at the end of that lonesome cinder road
