Story Behind The Song
"Nail Up Through My Shoe" was inspired by an incident where Cole's best friend Devlin injured his heel while partying with Cole in NYC and subsequently telling him that he was on his second fifth of whiskey that month and it was only the 3rd of the month because he was depressed by the recent umpteenth breakup with his long-term girlfriend. "I'm missing you like a Nail Up Through My Shoe" was hatched as a way to say that Devlin wasn't really missing his girlfriend, as it was a doomed relationship for a while. Nostalgia played a large part in the title as well.
Song Description
Both bright and dark, and cold and warm all at the same time, "Nail Up through My Shoe" chugs along like a slow train to a simple beat. Guitars chime and twang, pulse and sing as the backdrop to the moody male vocals that tell the story of being torn and dealing with the fallout of a breakup and weighing the pain versus the relief between loving someone and leaving them in order to keep one's sanity

Lyrics
The summer's here and it's a brand new month
Lord, I sure ain't running' dry
And I'm working' on my second fifth
Before the forth of July
I was feelin' like
I might've lost the fight
Head was hangin' down askew
Now I'm certain that I'm missin' you
Like a nail up through my shoe
Like a nail up through my shoe
I'm kinda hungry but too tired to eat
That kitchen's ten whole feet away
'Sides I think I had an egg or two
And that was only yesterday
The day wanes to the night
A gradual twilight blight
What's the lie and what is true
Now I'm certain that I'm missin' you
Like a nail up through my shoe
Like a nail up through my shoe
At least I'm outta sight
Far from the warming light
My heart's so cold it caught the flu
Now I'm certain that I'm missin' you
Like a nail up through my shoe
Like a nail up through my shoe
I'm lookin' forward to when autumn comes
The winter won't be far behind
