Let's Get Real

Story Behind The Song

Raven is a teacher and has concerns for the education of homeless children, and we had several instances in a row one raw mean Atlanta winter where we were made more aware of the suffering of homeless people, and how other people try not to look. It is not so much that they are not sympathetic, just don't know what to do and sort of worry about getting too involved.

Song Description

Each verse contrasts things we take for granted, like warm covers in cold weather, children networking with each other by phone on homework, and one line in the song asks "What do you call homework when you don't have a home? And who do you call for answeres when you don't have a phone?"

Lyrics

Let?s Get Real
Written by Marvin and Raven Taylor ©2001 Five Feathers Music (BMI)

Changes in the weather
Cold front blowing in
Make sure your bed has extra cover
People out there homeless
Huddled in the wind
Guess they?ll survive some way or another

Chorus:
Let?s get real
Clean down close to the bone
How do you feel
Looking in your mirror all alone
When you?re hiding in the night
Can you just turn on the light
And get real
______
Sharpen your new pencils
New clothes for back to school
Don?t forget the lunch that Mama makes you
But you get an education
With a different set of rules
No address, the school won?t even take you
______

Chorus
_____
Bridge:
What do you call homework
When you don?t have a home
Who do you call for answers
When you don?t have a phone
And where do you go when you know you gotta go,
And there ain?t no place to go
_____________
Solo
______
We write a check for charity
To show we realize
That we need a social revolution
But we hate to see the homeless,
So we don?t look in their eyes
Just let someone else find the solution
_____
Chorus
