Story Behind The Song
the windows in my studio overlook the east village. i can see the most beautiful sunsets from there. my friend larry john mcnally used to come over in the late afternoons and we'd write songs until dark. one day he pointed to a flock of birds that circled the east village. they seemed to come from below houston street, come up almost to my window and dance and turn over the roofs until they returned to somewhere behind red square, the building with a statue of lenin on the rooftop and a strange backwards clock on the side. from then on we looked for the birds. most evenings they came. such graceful companions.
sometimes when i write songs i feel as if magic comes to my room, touches the music and quietly leaves again. as if someone else was writing, without effort, almost unnoticeable.

Lyrics
Around 6 in the evening
With the skies still full of life
I look out my window
Over roofs in red and white
With the clouds for a backdrop
A few dozen birds appear
In a swirling formation
They dance, they turn,
They disappear
I think somebody feeds them
On a roof down there
Like you see in old movies
Some lonely guy takes care
He is sending a message
?cross the water beyond his eyes
to a love he remembers
to the other side of the sky
Ch: Like grains of sand
In the palm of your hand
If you hold them too tight
They will all slip through
Love?s like that
I know it?s true
If you let me fly
I?ll come back to you
Now darkness has fallen
The city lights shine like diamonds
I can see a bridge from here
That leads off this island
If you let me fly
I?ll come back to you
