Lyrics
Grandpa Played the Wildwood Flower
Larry Carr (c) 2003
(Wildwood flower intro 1st half)
(Chorus)
Grandpa played the Wildwood Flower on an old flat top guitar
I still see his big wide grin and half unlit cigar
To me he was the greatest guitar picker in the land
I'd gaze in awe as the melody came alive at his command
(Verse 1)
When he was through he'd strike a match and light that short cigar
He'd say "One day you're gonna learn to play that old guitar
I'd pick it up and stretch my stubby fingers 'cross the strings
One day I finally got it right when I was 'bout fourteen
(Wildwood flower 2nd half)
(Verse 2)
Youd've thought he won the pot from lookin' at his face
He taught me "Under the Double Eagle" then "Amazing Grace"
Then at his house at Christmas time, there under the tree
Was a BB gun for my brother Luke and a Sears guitar for me
(Verse 3)
The saddest thing in my young life was the day my grandpa died
Everybody loved him so and most just sat and cried
His blood was pumpin' through my veins, so in that desperate hour
I picked up that old flat top box and played the Wildwood Flower
(Wildwood flower 1 verse)
(Verse 4)
Forty years have come and gone and I still play and sing
Little eyes are watching as I pick these guitar strings
He looks at me as if I stand as tall as the Eiffel Tower
And soon I will be teachin' him to play the Wildwood Flower
(CHORUS)
Grandpa played the Wildwood Flower on an old flat top guitar
I still can see his big wide grin and half unlit cigar
To me he was the greatest guitar picker in the land
I'd gaze in awe as the melody came alive at his command
(Tag)
