Iowa Lake

Story Behind The Song

Personal experience

Song Description

In the spring and summer of 2011, western Iowa was buried with water from a local dam that was to be released periodically during the spring. Due to a record rainfall, the dam over filled and the towns of Hamburg and Percival had to be flooded in order to preserve the dam and other surrounding cities. Peoples homes, farming communities, and entire towns were buried under the water, thus leaving them to start their lives over in other towns. They left behind all of their belongings, and began their new life. Had the Army Corps of Engineers released the water from the dam during the early spring, this would not have occurred.

Lyrics

IOWA LAKE John Worsham

1. Under the water, if you had the time to look,
You would find whatever's left of what the river took
You would find a farm that seven generations built
All wiped out of existence by another man's guilt

2.Under the water is the church where I was saved
The schoolhouse and the playground living underneath the waves.
You'd find the cemetery where my family's laid to rest
Now it's just a memory from another man's mess.

Ch: No it wasn't a tornado that took away this town
No ice or snows a-blowin' that finally took her down
But a man behind a desk who decided he could make
My one and only home become an Iowa Lake

3.Under the water, if you had the time to give
You would find whatever's left of where I used to live
You'd find a town that made it through the hardest times.
Brought to a sudden end by another man's crimes (chorus)

4.Under the water is the place where I was born
In a three room house built beside a field of corn
I never thought I'd live to see it all just disappear
All thanks to the local Army Corps of Engineers.
(chorus)
