Armchairs and Wine - The Finish Line

Stopped by an old friend the other day, to wish him a better New Year.
The smile on his face, was the same warm embrace, but we were different.
His eyes were as kind and familiar, familiar as facing a mirror.
And who could have thought, forty years would all pass, all so quickly.
From out of the cold we both stood there, and laughed at our earlier days.
The old college jokes and the pipe you once smoked, now more fitting.
(And the) tales of our sons and our daughters, at nineteen I couldn't foresee.
Of a time in my life when we'd sit through the night, reminiscing.
What's happened to you, what's happened to me?
My savior could never convince me.
That this marathon race, kept increasing its pace,
It's a dash for a small speck of time - and the ribbons would fade at the line.
There was never a time that I saw you, that I dreaded the shake of your hand.
But the raunchy old jokes and the cigarette smoke, have been traded for armchairs and wine.
And we?re facing the same finish line.
Just got a call from an old friend, they asked if I'd heard about you.
