Story Behind The Song
There is a donut shop in my hometown where "Judy", complete with bouffant hair, works. I took the liberty of creating a story line for her life.
Song Description
Story song demonstrating that it's never too late to create the life you want. A woman stuck in a mundane job fantasizes about going away. Lots of imagery supported musically by guitars, octave mandolin, and snare drum.

Lyrics
DONUTS AND DAYDREAMS
JUDY WORE HER AUBURN HAIR TEASED IN A TALL BEEHIVE
SHE'D BEEN WEARING IT LIKE THIS SINCE 1965
SAME YEAR SHE LOST HER FOLKS, IT WAS A HIT AND RUN
JUDY GOT THE DONUT SHOP, BECAME HER BROTHER'S GUARDIAN
NOT EXACTLY WHAT SHE'D PLANNED ON TURNING TWENTY-ONE
SHE WOULD CLOSE HER EYES AND FLY A MILLION MILES AWAY
CHORUS 1
SHE HAD DONUTS AND DAYDREAMS BY THE BAKER'S DOZEN
SHE WISHED HER LIFE COULD BE SOMETHING THAT IT WASN'T
DAY IN DAY OUT FATIGUE AND REGRET
STUCK TO HER SKIN LIKE SUGAR AND SWEAT
JUDY SHOVED A TRAY OF LONG JOHNS ON THE BOTTOM SHELF
POURED A FOLGERS FOR HER BROTHER, ANOTHER FOR HERSELF
SHE KNEW EDDIE SPIKED HIS COFFEE FROM A BOTTLE HE KEPT HID
IT BROKE HER HEART TO THINK ABOUT WHEN HE WAS JUST A KID
SHE COULDN'T CHANGE HIS DRINKING WAYS NO MATTER WHAT SHE DID
BUT SHE COULD CLOSE HER EYES AND FLY A MILLION MILES AWAY
CHORUS 2
SHE HAD DONUTS AND DAYDREAMS BY THE BAKER'S DOZEN
SHE WISHED HER LIFE COULD BE SOMETHING THAT IT WASN'T
JUDY KNEW THE ACHE IN HER HEART
WAS TELLING HER SHE WAS CRUMBLING APART
EDDIE FLIPPED THE MIXER SWITCH AND STARED INTO THE BATTER
JUDY'S NOTE WAS ON THE COUNTER WHERE THE GREASE HAD SPLATTERED
SHE'D SAID I'M SORRY ED, I'LL BE GONE FOR A LONG WHILE
I'VE REALIZED I NEARLY HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO SMILE
P. S. NOW I'M SEEING THINGS IN A WHOLE NEW HAIRSTYLE
SHE USED TO CLOSE HER EYES AND FLY A MILLION MILES AWAY
CHORUS 3
SHE HAD DONUTS AND DAYDREAMS BY THE BAKER'S DOZEN
SHE WISHED HER LIFE COULD BE SOMETHING THAT IT WASN'T
A WISH FOR EVERY DONUT SHE'D FRIED
JUDY LEFT TO FILL THE HOLE INSIDE
TAG
A WISH FOR EVERY DONUT SHE'D FRIED
JUDY LEFT TO FILL THE HOLE INSIDE
