Story Behind The Song

Young girls. Summer Evenings. Fireball Whiskey and lots of secrets.

Song Description

This song is about a jaded male, hurt from his previous shortcomings in relationships. Discouraged by his past, he tries to rationalize ignoring a new, optimistic, and much younger, lover. The song is less about how naive young girls are about love and more about how the guy is mocking her naivety to justify running away from a new relationship instead of taking the emotional risks. This is hard for him, because he is both thrilled and terrified about a new relationship beginning.

Lyrics

Yeah, I've filled these shoes with holes
but she's a much more sturdy soul
Girls like her put miles on me.
And I won't waste a day
To watch you fade away
I should learn to like to live

Please be a phase, Marie
Bright eyes don't ever see the rocks and tidal waves

She thinks the sun will wait to roll
And show her where to go
So one step before she thinks
And you beg the world to change
Your heart screams "rearrange,
Break free, you know you should"

Please be a phase, Marie
Bright eyes don't ever see the rocks and tidal waves

Please be a phase, Marie
Bright eyes don't ever see the rocks and tidal waves
