I Love You So Much Less Than Before

Story Behind The Song

I struggled with getting over someone for a couple years and all of sudden realized I was not waking up thinking about them anymore, and felt so relived to discover they weren't worth either the infatuation OR the criticisms I thought about them.

Song Description

This is a happy and funny song about realizing I was over somebody, and includes Petra Haden's lovely harmonies and violin riffs, and also features banjo, flute and an energetic, melodic bass line. It's in the vein of pop-Americana music and has interesting harmonics in the bridge. The song builds musically into interesting choral backups as the protagonist realizes, comically, that the object of his years-long infatuation is in fact just a very nice person, neither deserving infatuation nor demonization.

Lyrics

I miss you but I doubt it's you that I really miss
illusion wasted no time and held me in its grip
your warm distracting childish beauty led to new lows
if I'm not mistaken this time I'm finally letting you go
reality wears down emotions
and rivers seem to find their ocean

It doesn't bother me anymore
I don't wake up thinking about you anymore
you can do your thing, whatever it is that you do
I don't care anymore
I love you so much less than before

I'm sorry that I expected you to act like me
and I'm sorry that common ground
could leave me so empty
colors breathed life into the static
but words caught up to all the music

It doesn't bother me anymore
I don't wake up thinking about you anymore
you can do your thing, whatever it is that you do
I don't care anymore
I love you so much less than before

No more a prisoner of your laughter
your eyes do not matter like they did before
Time dragged on and on
I'm sure you're really very nice
(nice and kind)

It doesn't bother me anymore
I don't wake up thinking about you anymore
you can do your thing, whatever it is that you do
I don't care anymore
I love you so much less than before
I love you so much less than before
