I Love You @4:30

Story Behind The Song

I was on top of a hill in Surat, India, looking down at a herd of cows sifting through trash on a city street and thought I have a pattern of shifting my mood into beauty about every day, wherever I am, at dusk. It made me think of telling my equally weird sister, "I love you at 4:30" and writing a song about it that encourages free thought and world travel.

Song Description

This is a mid-tempo, toe-tapping and interesting pop song with acoustic guitar, piano and a busy, melodic bass line with a quirky and lyrical vocal melody and East Indian percussion. There are repeated lines of "imagination is evolution" and other odd non-sequitur phrases to convey freedom of thought and a dreamy energy, along with an embrace of being a moody person who regularly finds beauty at dusk. The song is about free thought much more than any personal relationship and also has significant elements encouraging world travel. With such dynamic ranges, classic rock instrumentation and harmonies, the piece has an intellectual, Beatlesque influence.

Lyrics

I love you @4:30 and the sun shines
slipping down the color wheel in a winter sky
I love you @4:30 when I'm halfway around the world
and shadows prove their might between day and night

This is the moment when memories seem to take shape
when all that's outside lets the inside forfeit the game
I love you @4:30 and that's forever

My planets align and I can forgive at 4:30
3:00 a.m. is so far away at 4:30
never believe what they say
there's always an easier way

I love you @4:30 when the skies change
the ceding light is a welcome respite in my mind's eye
I love you @4:30 but for God's sake
where are you hiding
and why can't you be here at daybreak

Between when the world is so complex and cold
and when nothing is impossible
between all my moods and the changing light lies a secret

I got a crush on an innocent world at 4:30
melancholy brings elation back at 4:30
never believe what they say
there's always an easier way
to think about who you are
you don't have to go very far
to see it's all a mystery
the change in the weather is free

imagination is evolution
imagination is evolution

never believe what they say
there's always an easier way
to think about who you are
you don't have to travel too far
to see it's all a mystery
the change in perspective is free

mountains and lakes and incense about @4:30
the colors of the slums stir my soul @4:30

people crowding in the streets and cram on a train
people crowding in the streets and cram on a train
wishing wells and waterfalls and pink crystal balls
wishing wells and waterfalls and pink crystal balls
imagination is evolution
imagination is evolution

3:00 a.m. is so far away
