Lyrics
He drove in from the coast
He swore he hadn't heard a decent song since the seventies
And he loved the wrong sort of girls
He needed warmth he needed it badly
But the politics of life left him cold
While hope whetted his appetite
Out on the road, outon the everlasting highway
Out on the road, counting headlights in the rain
The city suburbs drepressed himalmost as much as the day-long drizzle
The tidy houses devoid of light and charm
And the shops closed early in those parts
Shoppers shuffled home on grey pavements of disappointment
The footsoldiers of lost fortunes
He approached a strip of meaningless traffic lights and half empty bars.
Drinkers with heads full of beer and tattoo humour
Girls sipping neon cocktails of oblivion
With tight-cut skirts and secret cigarettes
A drunken dizzy dream
On his right the stadium dark and abatoir cold
The players under a callous code of curfew
Still no victory here
His mind turned to Martha, the stawberry blonde with the raspberry ripple body and the bleak bitter aftertaste
His drive home was like his drive home every night
Tomorrow's re-run and yesterday's deja vu
