Story Behind The Song
Someone gave me the title "What's So Good About Goodbye" and I wrote the song, initially about divorce. But the third verse seemed to write itself. I got upset over finding out the father died. Coincidently, my father died a few months after.

Lyrics
So proud behind the wheel
Of my daddy's Kenworth rig
I couldn't see over the dashboard
But shiftin' gears I felt so big
He was gone for weeks haulin' freight
On the porch i'd sit and wait
Listen until
His jake brake rubbled down our hill
A couple of days of him sleepin'
And watchin; me play ball
I hated it when his bags were packed
And waitin' in the hall
Chorus:
He'd say, no tears now son
Cause you're the head of the house when I'm gone
Standin' tall and brave I tried
But when I heard his last word
I'd always break down and cry
Can you tell me what's so good about goodbye
After ten at night
When I heard the telephone ring
I'd leap from my bed, race down stairs
"I'll get it" I'd sing
We'd talk for an hour
He'd ask "did you pitch tonight?
Have you got your homework done
Are momma and Devon all right?"
I never wanted to hang up
I cherished every word he said
But in his gentle way, he'd pause and say
Well, it's time for bed
Chorus
They took dad's truck away
And it don't seem fair
Cause dad was in the hospital
And he'd lost all his hair
Too weak to play catch
He talked of strength that comes from within
And how a lesson learned
Is worth more than a win
Momma sobbed as she closed
The door to daddy's room
And I was the last one he called in
Chorus
